What is Charting and Technical Analysis?

Essentially there are two methods for choosing trades – Fundamental and Technical Analysis. Amongst each there are many variations.

The main point of difference between the two is that the Fundamental/Value trader looks at the company’s fundamentals such as industry, past performance, forecast performance, drivers, PE ratios, etc, etc. At Planet Wealth we traditionally choose stocks based on fundamentals, and you can read more about that here.

Technical Analysis traders, like John Howell, choose trades based on certain indicators - provided by the market - that provide a buy or sell signal.

Specifically, Technical Analysis is the forecasting of future price movements based on an examination of past price movements. Extensive research has revealed there are ‘patterns’ to the movement of stock price charts, and technical analysis identifies and predicts when these patterns are likely to occur again. It is less about the company itself, as in Fundamental Investing, and more about market trading patterns.

Like weather forecasting, technical analysis does not result in absolute predictions about the future. Instead, it can help investors anticipate what is "likely" to happen to prices over time, and ‘stack the odds in your favour’.

So in a nutshell, technical analysis can give you specific indications of ‘when’ to enter a trade, and very importantly, when to ‘exit’. John looks for a group of these technical signals to enter a trade and once in, is often out of that trade within a couple of days (sometimes the same day), usually with a profit.

The beauty of this type of trading is that you don’t need to risk huge amounts of money to start, and John has often made 20% to 40% return on capital invested in just a few days.
